You should allow from 24 to 48 hours to pass after an electrolysis treatment before exposing skin to UV rays (including tanning beds). If sun exposure cannot be avoided, use a non-oily sunblock with a high SPF to protect healing skin from freckling.
Electrolysis is the ONLY method of PERMANENT hair removal approved by the FDA. It has been used since 1880.
In electrolysis, an extremely fine needle, called a probe, is inserted into the hair follicle and a small electrical current travels from the tip of the probe into the follicle. The electrologist then tests the hair to see if it releases by giving the hair a gentle tug with a tweezer (you should never feel the hair being yanked out). If the hair does not release, the electrolysis process will be repeated until the unwanted hair can be easily removed. It is very normal for a hair to come back a few times and become finer each time until it disappears altogether. When a hair doesn't appear for more than 3 months after electrolysis, it will never come back again.
Unwanted hair can be safely removed from most body areas. The most common areas are:
* The inside of the ears and nose cannot be treated
Two methods are utilized. Either can be used depending on the type of hair the client presents. They are:
Anyone 12 years of age and older.

Following a treatment there may be slight redness, which usually fades within a few hours. Occasionally, tiny scabs may occur. Scabs are a normal part of the healing process and should not be picked off.
All hairs have differing cycles of growth, and all are not visible on the surface of the skin at the same time. Hair normally grows for its usual cycle and then naturally sheds and replaces itself. Following active growing periods, most hair follicles go into a dormant stage, which can last from three to 12 months before a replacement hair appears. The appearance of these coarse replacement hairs from dormant hair follicles should not be mistaken for regrowth from previously treated follicles. In addition, deep, coarse hairs that have been damaged for a prolonged period (usually by waxing or tweezing) may need repeated treatments to eliminate. Progress is seen as, with repeated treatments, these tough hairs grow back lighter and thinner, and eventually, are destroyed permanently.
The number of treatments necessary varies with each client. Factors such as hair growth cycles, the amount and type of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods (such as waxing and tweezing), heredity, hormone function, normal physiologic changes, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program for each individual. It is very important to adhere to the recommended treatment schedule to achieve optimum results in the shortest time frame. Although electrolysis takes time, once the hair is permanently destroyed, it is gone forever.
While laser promoters compare laser to electrolysis, laser-assisted hair removal is only approved to offer reduction of hair, not permanent removal. Many times the hair grows back after thousands of dollars have been spent. Additionally, laser hair removal has not been evaluated for long-term safety of the patient's skin and health. Electrolysis is the permanent choice.
Waxing, tweezing, and threading all rip the root from the follicle, causing blood to rush to the area to heal it. The increased blood flow nourishes the hair cells and stimulates growth, resulting in darker, coarser hairs. Additionally, it can stimulate surrounding follicles, turning "peach fuzz" hair into dark coarse hair, so the amount of embarrassing hair multiplies. When this occurs, the roots become large and the discoloration (a dark shadow like seen on a man's face) appears in these areas. Ingrown hairs also become a problem. To keep your skin clear with these methods, they must be done frequently, forever.
Depilatories remove the hair by dissolving it with a chemical. This can result in a chemical burning of the skin. Shaving is inexpensive and easy–however, the hair will grow fast and feel stubbly.
Hair can be removed safely from most moles using electrolysis. A written approval from your physician may be required.
Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy can promote unwanted hair growth. If you experience this, it is safe to undergo electrolysis treatment while pregnant. As always, consult your physician before beginning treatment.
